One of my favorite studies on political speechwriting and messaging is a seemingly trivial one: word-counts. Without having to watch the speech, one can count the words, note the ones used most frequently, and conclude the general topic and tone of discussion. Here is a great image, with larger words corresponding to higher frequency of utterance:

If you look, you see a few giant words popping out that every President uses--some variant of "America," "people," and "country." However, there are a few words that stand out, which point to that truly subliminal message the president was trying to broadcast: "Health," "Education," "College," "Energy," "Responsibility," "Years." Expect the first five words to be the focus of the administration's efforts throughout the coming months; but expect no quick fix, as the last word alludes to.

Solely following word counts was a study I undertook when we had a President who could barely speak in full sentences; under the leadership of one of the great orators of the modern presidency, I must confess that I might have to actually watch a few events. Wink, wink.
